Fabulous fitting rooms and summer store displays

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

I’m looking at the summer gift show calendar and it looks like there’s no way to avoid the heat.  Dallas, Atlanta, Orlando, Los Angeles, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas and with the recent heat in the northeast, it looks like New York City may not be any cooler. I can’t wait to visit some stores in Connecticut in October! For now, here are a few summer inspired displays:

Naples Soap Company, Retail Details blog, store displayWhen your original store is located in a beach town, especially in Southwest Florida, you can use star fish, sea grass, shells and sand as display props all year round. I love the mix of white glass vase-style containers and the natural-colored boxes. I’ll bet it smells good, too! The Naples Soap Company has expanded to Georgia, Massachusetts and most recently, South Carolina. It’s encouraging to see a retail business growing.

Ants Display, Don Mechanic Showroom, Retail Details blog
Don Mechanic Showroom, Dallas Mart, Dallas TX

If you were at the gift show in Dallas last month, you likely saw this cute little picnic scene in the window at the Don Mechanic Showroom. It was right by the escalator and every day it made me smile. I was “prop shopping” for fall and holiday displays, but I’ll bet these ants were used in more than a few 4th of July retail window displays. I’m planning to peek in their Atlanta showroom next week and see what other fun display ideas I can find.

Retail Details blog, store window, visual merchandising, retail display ideas

This window is a follow-up to prior blogs where I featured bikes as visual merchandising props. One of my favorite features of using a bike prop is that it functions as a 2-sided display. I always appreciate a store window that is also an interior display. I understand that the store in this picture is no longer in business. I hope the wonderful old bike found a good retail home.

Fusion Home Fashion, Retail Details blog, belt display idea

I look for display inspirations wherever I go. Every once in a while, I get stopped in my tracks by a simple idea that I wish I could claim as my own. Belts are a challenge to display in a tidy and eye-catching way. Fusion Home Fashion solves that problem with this wall-mounted belt display currently in their store at the Legacy Shops in Plano, TX. They mounted basic cabinet door handles and spaced them so that the belts could be positioned to display five belts in a very interesting configuration. Note the sectioned shelf at the bottom and you have a very clever, effective display.

I’m adding these to my favorite fabulous fitting room file!
Confederacy Boutique, Retail Details blog, fitting rooms
Shop Confederacy – Hollywood, CA

These vintage telephone booths serve as the fitting rooms at Shop Confederacy in Los Angeles, CA. Inspired by the 1940’s, each fitting room has an antique telephone that dials the front desk in case you need a different size. They also have a tea room you can book ahead for private fittings.

Lynn Steven Boutique, Retail Details blog, Fitting roomsThe Lynn Steven Boutique in Vancouver, British Columbia has a circular structure in the center of the store. When you get close, you can see

that the round walls are constructed by stacking used paperback books. The local architecture firm, McFarlane Green Biggar, have been widely recognized for this design and how it fits with a sustainable philosophy.

Thanks for taking the time to read the Retail Details store display blog. You can submit your unique store displays for consideration for use in upcoming blogs. Send them to the email address below.

Retail Details Blog – Corrugated & Understated

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Ebarrito, Retail Details blog, 4-29-10, store display

eBarrito - recycled cardboard display fixturing in Italy

eBARRITO is a green-thinking brand that specializes in bags and leather accessories. Its ecological integrity extends right through – even to how its sales outlets are built! Their displays are made from specially carved and shaped cardboard.  The eBarrito stores consist of modular, double-pressed cardboard walls equipped with wavy-style shelving – an  effect achieved with interlocking tubular sections. It’s a fresh new ethical style with a strong visual impact created by the designer Francesca Signori  for the Milan-based brand. Signori believes in “Giving people a small ‘!’ moment. We believe these small ‘!’ moments are what make our days so interesting. That’s why we want to reconstitute the everyday by collecting and reshaping them into something that’s easy to understand.”

ReInvent, Retail Details blog, 4-29-10, store displayLikely inspired by nature and the use of sustainable materials, these cardboard animal mounts are fun and I think they make great display pieces. I first saw these on the Facebook page of ReInvent Store, located in Auburn, Alabama. They certainly fit in with the tagline of the store: reuse. recycle. reinvent. I can see them spray painted to fit a store’s decor- using low VOC paint, of course.

Rue Lafayette, Retail Details blog, 4-29-10, store display

Rue Lafayette - Saint Louis, MO

Keeping with the “reusing” theme, Araceli of Rue Lafayette  in Saint Louis, MO, sent me these pictures of an old food case from her cafe. She repurposed it to display gifts and is now filled with French soaps made from flowers and fruit and soaps made from vegetables, called Salad Bar. The large, rounded glass, full-visibility fronts of food cases make them an ideal alternative to traditional retail display cases.

New To You, Retail Details blog, 4-29-10, store display

New To You - Falls Church, VA

Consignment shops, resale stores and thrift shops have some unique display challenges. One of the main tasks is finding effective ways of displaying one-of-a-kind items, since they seldom have multiples to do groupings. For this reason, displays are frequently bonded by one color or a single style or using props for a theme. For displaying belts, I like using a display form. This one comes from New To You  in Falls Church, Virginia. It becomes a tidy belt display that far exceeds hanging multiple unmatching belts on a hook or tossing them into a basket.  For non-resale shops, add a SALE sign and it would make a great advertisement for an accessory sale. Pair it with another form showing jewelry, handbags or scarves and it makes an attractive accessory window.

Salt of the Earth, Retail Details blog, 4-29-10, store display

Salt of the Earth stores, Webster Groves & Saint Louis, MO

Never underestimate the impact of a display hook. That may be my favorite visual merchan-dising advice tidbit as I continue my obsession with hooks. How excited I was when I stumbled on this red branch, tiny bird hook as I was perusing the Facebook pictures of Salt of the Earth stores in Webster Groves and Saint Louis, Missouri. They feature gifts and home decor items by artisans from international ”villages and cities”. I always enjoy their displays and get inspired for new display ideas from their product mix.

Previous blog follow-ups: The blog about bicycles used as display pieces was very popular earlier this month. Here are a few more pictures of bike display ideas. (Click here to view previous blog. It will not redirect you from this page. It opens in a new window).

Vintage Bliss, Swiss Flower and Gift Cottage, Retail Details blog, 4-29-10, store display

Vintage Bliss - Boerne, TX (left) and Swiss Flower & Gift Cottage - Wheat Ridge, CO (right)

These are from Vintage Bliss in downtown Boerne, Texas and the Swiss Flower and Gift Cottage in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. I also Retail Details blog, 4-29-10, store display received numerous responses about the clear plastic head form filled with shredded paper. Patty from San Diego sent me this picture of a similar one which appears to be decoupaged.

I’m still looking for examples of unique store signage – SALE, OPEN/CLOSED, STORE HOURS. Signage is an important part of your visual merchandising plan. Send your pics to:

Store displays: sticks and stones…

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

OK, so there’s no way to rhyme that title with store displays. Believe me. I tried. The natural elements in these jewelry displays are representative of the organic trend in merchandising and an extention of eco-awareness and repurposing. Though using wood, rocks, shells and sea elements are not new to displays, I am choosing to share a few nice examples to show their usage.

Citrine Boutique, Adrift Laguna, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

Citrine Boutique - Victoria, BC (upper) Adrift - Laguna Beach, CA (lower)

Citrine Boutique, in Victoria, BC, takes a simple, yet sophisticated approach to their displays. Adrift, located in Laguna Beach, CA, has a raw edge to their wood displays, as you may expect in a So-Cal lifestyle boutique.

In my last blog post, I gave you a shopping list for display props to look for at thrift stores. For these wood displays, you need look no further than your backyard. Krazy Mary’s Boutique in Sacramento, CA, uses a twig, placed upright in a glass vessel, to give shape to a ring display. They chose a small, raw log to drape vintage-style necklaces, adding dimension, as shown below.

Unfinished woods are finding their way onto retail walls, as well. The Shine Collective in Baltimore, MD, secures a rustic shelf using visible iron brackets that add a rugged touch to the look. As an added display feature, they use old books, with the binding side up, to display necklaces. Wood planks are mounted flush on the wall of Kick Pleat in Austin, TX, providing a display area for belts and handbags. The impact here, comes from placing them on an otherwise blank wall.
Crush Boutique, Sweet Pastry Shoppe, Retail Details blog, SwirlMarketing.com

Crush Boutique - Boston, MA (left) Sweet Pastry Shoppe - Laredo, TX (right)

Seeing double? I stumbled on pictures of  how two very different stores use virtually the same display piece. Crush Boutique in Boston, MA, features shoes on theirs while the Sweet Pastry Shoppe in Laredo, TX, displays party favor treats that they prepared for a bridal shower.

Stylish Stork, Crush Boutique, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

Stylish Stork - Boise, ID (left) Crush Boutique - Boston, MA (right)

I’m ending this post with a couple of lovely props. Both have pretty designs and interesting shapes while providing multiple levels of display space. The Stylish Stork in Boise, ID, groups boxed baby items on the three shelves of this white piece. Crush Boutique in Boston, MA, recently sent me pictures of several new display pieces, including this flower cart. One of the nice features of both of these displays is that they are “open” and can be used against a wall or stand alone as multi-sided fixtures.

Thanks to all the retailers and showroom managers that send me pictures every day. Please share this blog with your friends and colleagues. Is that a refrigerator door on your wall?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Exit 9, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

Exit 9 Gift Emporium - Brooklyn, NY

Some call it a fridge. Grandma called it an icebox. The Swedes use a kylskap and the Germans keep their milk in a kuhlschrank. At Exit 9 Gift Emporium in Brooklyn, NY, they call it a display fixture.  It’s mounted right beside their book area and it displays their paper goods in a very cool way.

Something Special, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl Marketing

Something Special - Vincennes, IN

More doors in store: Something Special of Vincennes, IN, uses an old door as part of a 2-sided display featuring  colorful spring merchandise. Mounted atop a table, it not only serves as a divider, it provides height to the display and the “windows” keep it from obstructing the view.

Revolution Shop, Retail Details blog, store displaysOld doors get new life at Revolution Shop and A Details Shop, pictured above. In Charlotte, NC, Revolution Shop mounted hangrail between four weathered doors turning them into endposts  for clothing display. A Details Shop in Alpharetta, GA,  used them instead of drywall to form several fitting rooms in their store.

Shoefly and Sox - Ukiah, CA

At Shoefly & Sox  in Ukiah,CA, they added mirrors to the original panels of the door and placed it between several shoe shelves.

Trinket, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl Marketing

Trinket - Burlington, VT

When Rachel of Trinket in Burlington, VT, saw the last blog about the removable chalkboard stickers, she decided to share her chalkboard wall with Retail Details. Against the black chalkboard paint, the white shadowbox frames and accents really stand out. Messages are easily changed and allow for an interesting way to feature items, as the “Hydrate in Style” picture shows.

In Play Showroom, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

In Play Showroom, Los Angeles Market Center

Showrooms at wholesale markets are another resource for display ideas. At the In Play Showroom in the Los Angeles Market Center, they have a PEACE themed window created with kids clothing and accessories that they represent.  Chances are you have your camera with you at market, so be sure to look for display ideas while you are searching for the perfect products for your stores.

To duplicate something similar in your shop, take notice of any themes – regardless of department or category. For instance, a music theme, “suns” for summer or ”flags” for 4th of July. Theme displays can also be built around events.

Hi Ho Home Market, Retail Details blog, Swirl MarketingAt Hi Ho Home Market, in Gardiner, NY, Heidi has a “Honey of a Weekend” event in February. She creates theme displays of bees and honey products featuring the honey from a local honey supplier, Widmark Farms. This year, she had a special “prop” – a honey cake (note the chocolate bees:-)  made by The Village Tearoom and Bake Shop, another business in the Hudson Valley. By the way, the black/white checked base under the cake is the top to a hat box, placed over a pedestal cake plate. Love it!

Cupcake Baby Boutique, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

Cupcake Baby Boutique - Santa Rosa, CA

Speaking of props, I like when seasonal props provide more than just a decorative purpose. The wheelbarrow in this bunny display at Cupcake of Santa Rosa, CA, holds a nice amount of product. Also of note in this picture, is the quilt rack that appears to be modified to display tutus. I suspect it is a very versatile display piece.

You may want to PRINT THIS LIST: door knobs, maps, drawer pulls, record albums, trophies and suitcases. If you take this list with you when you shop for props, you should have a very productive shopping trip at garage sales, tag sales and thrift stores. Of course, you can buy these products new, but that’s not as inspiring. Here are some examples of what you can do with the items on your shopping list…

Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl Marketing, SwirlMarketing.com

Manik shop in Magnolia, AR, has knobs and drawer pulls mounted on boards, painted the same color as the wall. Shown here, they are displaying hats and scarves. I’m sure they work equally well for jewelry, handbags and belts.

Co Co An Experience, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

CoCo An Experience - Monclair, NJ

If you look closely at the large peace sign in this window at CoCo An Experience,  Inc. in Montclair, NJ, you may notice that it is covered with maps.  Is it ironically peace on earth or earth on peace?

Record albums can be hung on walls, windowCivil Disobedience San Diego, Retail Details blog backdrops or suspended with clear fishing line. Shown here, Civil Disobedience Boutique, in San Diego, CA, uses the records and the album jackets to cover a simple plywood backdrop.

Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl Marketing, SwirlMarketing.comScarlett, formerly in Montreal, QC, suspended their record albums, which created some movement in the display window.

Retail Details blogTrophies. Get some spray paint and use your imagination. Here’s a hint for inspiration.

Romualdo, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl Marketing

Romualdo - Madeira, OH

I saved, for last, the most common, versatile and effective display prop of all time, suitcases. I devote the rest of  this blog to showcasing different ways of using suitcases for many types or products in all types of stores. Romualdo, a men’s store in Madeira, OH, uses a trunk as the base of one display and they stack briefcases amongst product on their shelves.

Street Chic Boutique, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl MarketingStreet Chic Boutique in Northbrook, IL, stacked colorful hat box suitcases in their window and perched a seated mannequin on top. Of note is how this display looks good from the back as well. That can be a challenge with store windows.

Ziezo, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl Marketing

Ziezo - St. Louis, MO

Cases in varying shapes and sizes add nicely to the vintage props in this display at Ziezo in St. Louis, MO.

Curtsy Bella, Solid Gold Boutique, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl MarketingIn that same vein, Curtsy Bella in Seattle, WA created a multi-purpose display out of a steamer trunk and Solid Gold Boutique of Austin, TX, uses a train case to contain feathered headbands – a tricky item to display.

Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl Marketing, SwirlMarketing.comBaby toys sit sweetly in these small cases at Honey-Bunch in Toronto, Canada. I can safely say that the display bowl in this picture is also vintage because I know that Nicole loves such things in her lovely shop.

With sand as a stabilizer, Bella Nola, in New Orleans, LA, uses a suitcase as a display for coasters and tiles. Geaux suitcase!

In St. Louis, MO, Rue Lafayette stacks boxes of tea in a vintage case which brings together the gift shop and cafe parts of the shop.

Edit Shoppe in Alberta, Canada, uses a “going to grandmas” sized case to contain a mix of colorful socks.
