Retail Road Trips & Display Recap part 1

As the year comes to an end, it’s a good time to reflect on some of the lovely stores we visited and celebrate all the independent retailers we met along the way. Enjoy this recap and as always… Stay display inspired!

A speaking engagement in Ohio gave me the opportunity to take a side trip to visit some retail stores in Pittsburgh, PA. Located in a former run down old bar, No. 14 Boutique was a true gem of a find with lovely displays. Owners Michelle and Brianne turned the space into the most chic 1000 square feet in Lawrenceville.

When a writing assignment in Nashville coincided with an event I have wanted to attend for quite some time, the stars aligned and we finally attended one of the City Farmhouse Pop-up Fairs in Franklin, TN.

The vendor booths are truly a lesson in merchandise styling.

One of my favorite themes was how many of the vendors incorporated flowers and plants in the styling of their booths.

Kim Leggett, the organizer of the City Farmhouse pop-up fairs, has a book coming out in 2017 and I’m told she shares some of her styling secrets, so I’ll be watching for the book release and keep you posted.

Gift industry trade shows take me to Atlanta and New York at least twice per year, so I enjoy exploring neighborhoods and finding fun stores like Soapology NYC, (above) and Boogaloos Boutique (below) in Ponce City Market in Atlanta.

Visual Merchandising Tips and Displays at AmericasMart

I’m just back from AmericasMart and excited to share a few fun displays. The wholesale trade show booths and showrooms are wonderful sources for creative display ideas and the Atlanta show never disappoints!

I was on the hunt for interesting display backdrops and this one from ChickeeBoom in the Road Runners showroom caught my eye. I like how the damask pattern is broken up with a wood insert for visual interest and pattern relief which keeps it from looking too busy. The trick with displaying jewelry – and other small items – is to draw the customer closer so they can clearly see the product.

I love bold graphics on a back wall to draw customers into the store or in this case, into the showroom. Color is key to this cohesive story in the Spartina 449 showroom at AmericasMart.

The state-shaped boards in the Heartstrings window feature the new state collection. The Grace Direct/Bridgewater Candles showroom is well-known for their creative displays. Visit the Retail Details social media sites to see more from this showroom.

State-themed charms are cleverly displayed on a large easel map in the Gleeful Peacock booth. I zoomed in to show the chalk graphic indicating these as Best Sellers. Customers want to know what’s “hot”. This is especially effective in gift stores where customers are looking for gift suggestions.

Anatomy of a trade show booth

I had the pleasure of interviewing Alejandra Remijio about her work on the Danica Studio trade show booth at NY NOW. You may know Alejandra as a designer of one of a kind and limited edition table linens, but she is also a talented retail visual concept designer in New York and beyond.

Q (Becky): How closely do you follow a plan-o-gram in booth setup?

A (Alejandra): To execute the set up, I used a booth layout schematic for the fixtures and photos to place the merchandise. This particular layout was patterned after the booth in Atlanta at AmericasMart. It’s very important to keep the look of your brand consistent, so your customers can recognize you at these big trade shows.

Q: General tips from a VM expert?

A: No matter what kind of job I’m hired to do, I always bring my own tools – scissors, tape, twine, glue etc. Know your clients brand vision and always remember the ultimate goal is to sell merchandise. Also, tell a story with the product and have fun!

Q: What are the main benefits and features of the perimeter racks?

A: The racks are a great way to display a lot of merchandise in a small area. With these fixtures, the upper as well as lower part of the space is being utilized. Also, the shelves have various heights which allow you to stack product, feature larger items and incorporate different vessels to showcase the merchandise. These custom racks have rungs at the top where hooks and various other creative merchandising techniques can be used.

Q: How does the merchandising plan for a table differ from racks?

A: Merchandising a front table is always a lot of fun! It’s an opportunity to attract first time customers, as well as feature new and best selling products. Having catalogues and other marketing materials available on a front table encourages the customer to take one, with the hope that they will follow up at a later date.
