Bikes. Trikes. Full size or miniature – vintage or new - bicycles make great display props.

Crush Boutique bicycle display - Retail Details blog

Crush Boutique - Boston, MA

Inspiring a store revamp, this antiqued iron bicycle is quite a statement piece at the Beacon Hill area shop, Crush Boutique, in Boston, Mass. Shown here, sporting scarves, sweaters and shoes, a bicycle can fit in as a display piece in most any type of retail environment. One of my favorites was suspended from the ceiling in a men’s department (click here).

The Wandering Wardrobe - Springville, UT

Trellis, arbors, planters and other such garden display elements serve nicely as spring store displays.  At the Wandering Wardrobe in Springville, Utah, they use a life-size metal bike prop, shown here in an outdoor display at their shop. These metal display pieces are two sided and usually have a basket area, ideal for holding products. They can be easily spray painted, as well.

Green Oaks Antiques - Retail Details blogI found several garden art display ideas where I found this trike at Green Oaks Antiques in Rochester, Indiana.

Seraphim Kids - Retail Details blogI don’t think this piece is from a garden department, but this baby bootie and headband display at Seraphim Kids in Troy, Alabama, reminds me of the tomato cages frequently used as Christmas tree displays. The wire is the perfect diameter for the small hooks. I’ve seen a similar piece as a displayer of men’s ties. It makes a full-round display and adds height to a countertop or table merchandising story.

Mixing old and new.

Santoro and Company - Bridgeton, NJ

Santoro & Co. in Bridgeton, NJ, merges antiques, gifts and home decor. Shown here, you can see how well they incorporate the popular Ugly Dolls as part of their merchandise mix. I especially like the doll that is hanging from the chandelier, watching over the “uglyverse”, which is a universe where ugly means unique and special. I wonder what kind of tea you serve at an Ugly Doll tea party.

Jewelry is frequently displayed in glass-front showcases with adjustable glass shelves, like the one shown below.  This can be challenging due to height limitations.

Poppy and Stella - Baltimore, MD

Poppy and Stella in Baltimore, Maryland, creates visual interest by using picture frames and old books as anchors for the necklaces in their glass case. Clear acrylic and white earring stands balance the display without creating a cluttered look. More jewelry displays:

Sometimes I stumble on clever ways that retailers have managed to feature hard-to-display items. Here are a few ideas to share:

Baglady Boutique, Retail Details blog

Baglady Boutique - Springfield, MO

The Baglady Boutique in Springfield, MO, uses smiley face balloons to display stretch cloth baby head bands.

I found this wetsuit cap display and I think it could be used for a  hat or head band display. It is simply a clear head form that is filled with shredded color magazine pages.

Retail Details blogChicky Bella in Chandler, Arizona, took a divider screen that would normally be used to show photos and filled each frame with paper or cloth and a vertical ribbon. The ribbon holds hair bows and the frames spin for two-sided display.

Store displays: sticks and stones…

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

OK, so there’s no way to rhyme that title with store displays. Believe me. I tried. The natural elements in these jewelry displays are representative of the organic trend in merchandising and an extention of eco-awareness and repurposing. Though using wood, rocks, shells and sea elements are not new to displays, I am choosing to share a few nice examples to show their usage.

Citrine Boutique, in Victoria, BC, takes a simple, yet sophisticated approach to their displays. Adrift, located in Laguna Beach, CA, has a raw edge to their wood displays, as you may expect in a So-Cal lifestyle boutique.

In my last blog post, I gave you a shopping list for display props to look for at thrift stores. For these wood displays, you need look no further than your backyard. Krazy Mary’s Boutique in Sacramento, CA, uses a twig, placed upright in a glass vessel, to give shape to a ring display. They chose a small, raw log to drape vintage-style necklaces, adding dimension, as shown below.

Unfinished woods are finding their way onto retail walls, as well. The Shine Collective in Baltimore, MD, secures a rustic shelf using visible iron brackets that add a rugged touch to the look. As an added display feature, they use old books, with the binding side up, to display necklaces. Wood planks are mounted flush on the wall of Kick Pleat in Austin, TX, providing a display area for belts and handbags. The impact here, comes from placing them on an otherwise blank wall.

Seeing double? I stumbled on pictures of  how two very different stores use virtually the same display piece. Crush Boutique in Boston, MA, features shoes on theirs while the Sweet Pastry Shoppe in Laredo, TX, displays party favor treats that they prepared for a bridal shower.

Stylish Stork, Crush Boutique, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

Stylish Stork - Boise, ID (left) Crush Boutique - Boston, MA (right)

I’m ending this post with a couple of lovely props. Both have pretty designs and interesting shapes while providing multiple levels of display space. The Stylish Stork in Boise, ID, groups boxed baby items on the three shelves of this white piece. Crush Boutique in Boston, MA, recently sent me pictures of several new display pieces, including this flower cart. One of the nice features of both of these displays is that they are “open” and can be used against a wall or stand alone as multi-sided fixtures.

Thanks to all the retailers and showroom managers that send me pictures every day. Please share this blog with your friends and colleagues. “Chalk” one up to spring fever

Friday, February 12th, 2010
Winter is hardly behind us, but the delivery boxes are full of spring merchandise. It’s time to pack away the snowflakes, valentine hearts and mardi gras beads and dig out the flowers, shamrocks and colored eggs.  Retail Details BlogIf you want to have some fun, plan a Dr. Seuss window to celebrate his birthday in early March. It’s all about the props. I enjoy finding fun and economical props. If you have ideas for displays and need props, send me a message. It’s likely that I have sources that I’ll be happy to share.

Paper lanterns are a popular prop. They are inexpensive and easy to work with. They come in various shapes and colors for all seasons. They collapse for easy storage and are simple in shape, so they do not distract from your merchandise. Pictured here, Sabella Couture, in Boston, combines paper lanterns with oversized flowers to create this wedding window. Once the window catches your eye, you look closer to see the detail of the long-stemmed flowers gracing the skirt of a wire form.  Lovely.

bouquets as mannequin heads. They use the silver torso forms that actually have arms like a mannequin, yet no heads or legs, making them much easier to work with. They take up less space, as well.

Frocks Boutique, Addison TX, Retail Details blog

Frocks Boutique - Addison, TX

I was unsure whether this was a headboard or a fence part, so Ashley from Frocks Boutique in Addison, TX, clarified for me. It’s part of fence. The fence is visible from outside too, making it a dual display. Two-sided displays can be tricky. Have you shopped at home improvement stores for displays?

Inspiration boards may serve several purposes. Used as a bulletin board, staff and customers can see fashion trends and current

merchandise in magazine features and ad copy. They can provide ideas about how to put outfits together and also stress the fact that your products are “in style”. In a previous blog post, we discussed the impact of celebrity sightings and their possible impact on your customer. Yes, you are giving up valuable wall space to hang an inspiration board, but it serves as advertising  if you do as Crush Boutique of Boston does, and show press clippings of your store in print.

Revolution Shop - Charlotte, NC

Revolution Shop in Charlotte NC, created a cork-board display wall that combines product pictures and actual merchandise creating a trend wall, of sorts.

Another example is to use a chalkboard to get your point across. Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

Speaking of chalkboards… what a great display tool these removable chalkboard stickers can be. They come in many laser cut Retail Details blogshapes like a TV, a drum set and a rocket, as well as a traditional framed version and the dress-maker’s form, as shown here. Retail Details blogThere are lots of display possibilities for these.
