Happy New Year from Retail Details blog

December 30th, 2011

Display. Sell. Repeat. Retail stores have been busy doing just that for the last month. It looks like retail traffic and sales figures numbers are up for the holiday season.  Recent Shop Local campaigns had a positive impact on small store sales. I’ve heard reports from over 100 independent stores, touting positive December sales. I’d like to hear from my non-local store readers, as well.  Hello Anthropologie, Macy’s & Disney ;-) I know there are thousands of you here. Display-wise, what worked? What dazzled? Can’t wait to see your transition windows from holiday to new years!

SALE TIME. “After Christmas” sales are in full swing, so let’s talk about SALE signage. Investing in some quality SALE lettering is worth the effort. Non-seasonal signs can be used over and over, year-round.

While window shopping this week, I came across this window at Thread in Winter Park, FL. Eye-catching letters hang around the necks of 4 mannequins, dressed in plain black tanks and jeans.

Here’s a DIY idea for unique sale signs that you can use in any type of store. I was reminded of the idea when looking at a picture on the facebook page of Lazy Jo Ranch Vintage Goods. Print your SALE words, as shown next to the inspiration picture. Use good quality paper, but something thinner than card stock works best. Roll the paper and secure it with a rubber band or ribbon for several hours. Unsecure it and roll it up small enough to fit into any clear bottle or jar. Once inside, it will expand to show clearly through the bottle. If you find the paper does not stay in place, you can add a little sand to the bottle which will help to secure the paper. SALE bottles can be easily placed into any display – print two pages for two sided usage, if needed. The bottles can be hung at varying heights in store windows or above apparel displays. Wine bottles can be corked with a message sign attached to the cork with a bent paper clip. Want a larger effect? Use clear vases. For a country look, use jars. For an elegant look, use perfume atomizers. Collect glassware that represents your store’s style and this idea will provide interesting, consistent SALE signage throughout your retail areas.

Creating messages with merchandise:

If you stock any items with monograms or lettering, take advantage of that by creating messages using the product. On that note, I leave you with CHEERS and a wish for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!

Stay display inspired!

Natural elements in store displays

December 15th, 2011

Visual merchandising with natural elements is popular in all types of retail stores and for catalog photography staging.

Tweed Baby Outfitters uses branches as fixture bars for hanging apparel and stumps for display risers for shoes. This store for babies and toddlers is located in the popular shopping area of Edgehill Village in Nashville TN.

These unique wall displays for jewelry at Umba Creative Coop in Boulder CO, are made from bark pieces, twigs and stump slices.

Felt birds and acorn bookends fit well in the merchandise mix with jewelry on branches in this display window at Trinket in Burlington VT.

Floral, greenery and shells are strategically placed in the jewelry and accessory display cabinets at Details in Winter Park FL.

Vintage props and dried flowers create a lovely vignette for this blue pottery display at The Farmhouse Store in Westfield NJ.

Holiday store display ideas 2011

November 30th, 2011

In fashion, you hear about wardrobe staples or must-haves in your closet. In retail, there are a number of such visual merchandising essentials. I’d like to add red and white striped ANYTHING to the list. Case in point: this holiday display at Little Paper Lane in Mona Vale, Australia.

The red and white striped bowls fit nicely into this Christmas display, but can also be used for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, nautical displays and whimsical displays with a cartoon or circus theme. In the US, they would be brought out for 4th of July, Memorial Day and various other patriotic celebrations. Can you think of other versatile display staples?

Holiday gift idea windows for…

…girls (above) and for boys (below). Both pictures are from Fiddlesticks in San Francisco, CA, and are fun examples of December store windows without traditional holiday color schemes.

Music for your eyes!

My favorite part of this display are the music books used as place mats, but if you look closely you will see a number of unique display element examples. HiHo Home Market in Gardiner, NY has been featured in the blog before and we always look forward to what the HiHo elves come up with for the holidays!

Where do you get your display inspirations?

Many of the display ideas that I share on the blog and on the Retail Details blog facebook page, come from catalogs and websites of vendors. This charming display idea comes from the Kringle Candle Company. Staged for a photo shoot, a few simple props set the tone for a cozy display.

Bold shapes and letters catch the attention of the passersby at Roost in Salem, MA. Good lighting adds to the effectiveness of displays. I recommend checking your window lighting during the day and at night.

Planning ahead: If you are attending the gift show in Atlanta in January 2012 and would like to schedule a consultation or display tour, please email Becky at SwirlMarketing@comcast.net

November 15th, 2011

We have so many wonderful holiday displays to share again this year. If you want to submit your store displays to be considered for the blog, you can email your display pictures to swirlmarketing@comcast.net

The FASHION DIVA TREE greets customers at Style in Waynesville, NC.

Are you enjoying the trend of White Christmas displays? This fabulous window display at CHANEL celebrates with a doilies motif. The dolls dressed in traditional CHANEL suits are a nice touch.

Another monochromatic display. This one uses various textures to create interest and adds drama to an all-white display.

Silver fits well with a white display theme that has a polar theme including some cute bears and a fabulous igloo prop.

A vintage Christmas at Feathernesters in Richmond, VA. The have some lovely displays in the shop and it’s rumored that you can enjoy a yummy brunch in the tea room, too!

Last, but not least are SWIRLS – one of our very FAVORITE THINGS at Retail Details (note the SwirlMarketing.com web address ;-) Becky has always been fond of swirls and continues to live up to her nickname as Swirl Girl!

Lots more display pictures to come, so stay tuned for many more and for bonus display ideas visit the Retail Details blog facebook page.
