Retail Details Announces National Store Display Contest Winners

January 15, 2011 – Retail Details (www.swirlmarketing.com), a national visual merchandising company and creative blog, announces A. Dodson’s of Suffolk, Virginia, as the first place winner in their New Year Store Display Challenge. This two-phase contest  invited independent retailers to submit pictures of their creative store displays to qualify for the main event.  Over 40 retail stores submitted contest entries. Finalists were chosen in November and were each shipped an identical box of props to create a New Year’s display during the first week of 2011.

A first prize of a $250 gift certificate for retail supplies at Gully’s Discount Store Fixtures  is being awarded to A. Dodson’s and a second prize of a custom-designed store display from The Display Lab will be awarded to Greetings From Geralyn  of Asbury Park, New Jersey.

The judges included experts in the areas of home decor, floral design, product development, and visual merchandising. All displays were  judged on creativity, originality, product representation, and visual merchandising techniques. Finalists were required to use all provided props and were allowed to add additional props and merchandise when positioning and photographing their display in either a store window or an in-store display. The judges were J. Schwanke of uBloom and JTV, Karen Benson, ASID, of Karen L. Benson & Associates and Justin Whittaker, Merchandise Manager at DSW Shoes.

    Can a freelance visual merchandiser submit an application on behalf of one of his accounts? I have a store in mind to use, but I am not the owner, merely the display guy!

    • Hi Greg. I assume you are talking about the display contest. Yes, as a vm, you can submit a store if you have their permission to use their pictures and their name (as well as yours) would be credited in the blog/contest/Facebook etc. Also, the same store must be willing to have you do the display during the first week of January – using the props that the contest provides – should you(they) be chosen as one of the finalists.

    I am a vendor within an antique shoppe. I do one of the front windows on a regular basis. Could I submit photos as a representative of the shop owner? The owner would love the idea.

    • Hi Debbie,

    Is it to late to get involved in this? Just send a couple pics of my window displays ive done this year??? is that how it goes?

    • Selena,
      It’s not too late to get involved. We are accepting entries through the end of November. You can send in up to 20 display pictures – any store displays, not just windows. It’s that easy to qualify. You will be notified in December if your store is chosen as a finalist. If so, you will receive a box of props to build a display with. All finalists will receive the exact same props & must use all of them. That’s what makes this contest so unique.
