Fall store displays, trends & techniques

Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile. ~William Cullen Bryant

As the orange transitions to gold, store displays are full of warm hues this time of year. A Day In The Country in Hendersonville, NC, mixes bronze and gold for a beautifully coordinated fall display. Bronze is very popular in home decor and fashion accessories. I expect to see it mixed with other metals in elegant Christmas displays later this year. Notice how seamlessly the metal chair is integrated into this display.

Don’t you love the bike in this fall display at French Cuff Consignment in Sacramento, CA? It has several nice compartments for displaying products. If you look closely you can see how well it is positioned among the other two display pieces without blocking the apparel display.

Sometimes, it’s all in the details. A ladder display provides height in this fall display at Dedrick’s Pharmacy and Giftsin New Paltz, NY. The display also exhibits an effective use of layering the products on the table by staggering the height of the lifts for the plate displays. The colors and patterns are arranged perfectly with just a small pop of yellow to draw customers in. This is a wonderful example of effective visual merchandising.

I notice a trend at A. Dodsons in Suffolk, VA. They love to use unusual coverings for walls and other display surfaces. Last year, they had a wall of corks and a fireplace covered entirely in candy. This year they have defined their pet area by creating a wall design comprised of dog bones. Unexpected twists are a great way to draw attention to an area of your store. If you create interesting, unique displays on a regular basis, your customers will come in looking for that next clever example. Inspire your customers with your displays.

Retail Details: a few simple displays, some visual merchandising tips and lots of inspiration!

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter in September in the Northern Hemisphere and in March in the Southern Hemisphere when the arrival of night becomes noticeably earlier. Since we have so many new international blog readers, we will continue to feature display ideas that can be adapted through the seasonal changes.  We’ll dedicate an upcoming October blog to Halloween and PINK breast cancer awareness displays. Meanwhile, visit the Retail Details blog Facebook page for bonus fall displays including pumpkins and pink!

A fence section at Ya-ya’s Creative Boutique provides the posts for displaying colorful scarves. This is also an idea that can be used for a two-sided display in a store window. Yaya’s follows a theme of  repurposed and upcycled works of art and features a variety of talented vendors. The creativity continues throughout their display areas at their shop in Fresno, CA.

Rolling pins mounted on curtain rod brackets are a clever, alternative way to display hand towels in the showroom of Peking Handicraft  at the Americasmart in Atlanta, GA.

A simple white stool provides height in the store window display at the Little Shop of Funkiness in London. It is non-distracting for the colorful Rice products and the fresh flowers are a nice touch. When shop windows are multi-paned, it is best to create simpler displays, as shown in this example.

Fall in America means football season. This display at The Pink Chalet in Orlando, FL, does a nice job of incorporating a team’s colors into a display with other non-collegiate merchandise. Round, tiered display tables are versatile and when they are glass, like this one, the product on the floor becomes a cohesive component of the display.

Recently, Kate’s Paperie on Broome Street in Soho, New York City had a grand opening event. I enjoyed following the progress of the new shop, as they posted pictures in a Facebook album. I especially liked the wall of wrapping paper sheets with these beautiful flowers hung above. You can see more of their lovely displays on their Facebook page.

For those who have inquired about a store display contest this year, it’s in the works. The announcement will come soon and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever!

Stay display inspired!

Displayvorites: staff picks, store displays

Monday, September 19th, 2011

We love visual merchandising! Retail Details blog reviews hundreds of store display pictures every week. In this bonus blog post we share a few favorites.

Chelsea’s pick:

This is one of Chelsea’s favorite displays at the Baglady Boutique in Springfield, MO. The bed is an old twin bed, painted a beautiful shade of brick red. They change the bed and accessories to match the season or to showcase new bedding designs. Additional quilts are hung on the wall in a way that encourages customers to touch them and to see the reverse sides. Accessories are displayed on the bed and numerous rugs peek out from beneath.

Chelsea Redfern is an intern at The Retail Details blog and is a visual merchandising princess ;-)

Becky’s pick:

There are no fashion faux paws in Naples, Florida, because the pampered pets are outfitted from Pucci & Catana Luxury Pet Boutique. Their pet beds, food dishes and water bowls are displayed in a white wall unit worthy of the designer handbags in surrounding stores in the upscale shopping area known as Fifth Avenue South.

Visit the Retail Details Facebook Page for many more display examples and stay updated by joining us on Twitter, too.

Stay display inspired!

Product as the primary focus in visual merchandising, store displays and trade show booth examples

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Visual merchandising pictorial: the product as the primary focus. Enter Sockerbit, which means “sugar cube” in Swedish. On Christopher Street in the West Village area of New York City, the owners of Sockerbit designed a clean, open, white retail space where the center of attention would be the sweets – their colors and shapes. The store has all white cabinetry and the candies are in clear bins allowing the product to be the primary focus. The Sockerbit shop keeps things sweet, simple and Swedish!

From the New York International Gift Fair, August 2011:

Black electrical tape was used to simulate shelves in the booth of Lazy Oaf, a brand from the UK, exhibiting at the NYIGF. The clever, almost comical, booth design, sets the tone for the fun cards and accessories on display in the booth. It looked even more 3-D in person. This booth was as eye-catching as many of the booths that had much more elaborate displays. Once again, the focus is on featuring the product.

It was not the first NYIGF show for Wakami, but it was the first time they had their own booth. Nice job!

This blog post opened with a Swedish store in the US, so sharing displays from an American store in Stockholm is only fitting – and represents the summer of Retail Details travels.

Woolrich offers men’s and women’s clothing that has embraced the outdoor lifestyle since 1830.

I’ve always enjoyed how their displays fit the theme of being the “Original Outdoor Clothing Company”.

Their small store in Stockholm is no exception. The industrial fixtures and concrete floors are softened by the use of their signature displays of books.
