Tuni Winter Park Orlando Florida Go Magic

GO MAGIC! Tuni - Park Ave, Winter Park, FL (Orlando)

GO MAGIC! I’m not much of a sports fan, so it took me a few minutes to realize the relevance of the brooms in this store window display at TUNI on Park Avenue in Winter Park, Florida. Apparently, the Orlando Magic basketball team “swept” the semi-finals and move on to the final round of the Eastern Conference NBA playoffs, which start today. I was visiting Orlando a few weeks ago and every direction I looked, I saw signs of support for the local team. I saw more GO MAGIC signs in people’s yards than I expect to see the week before a national political election. TUNI’s windows are alwaysworth a visit and they are normally filled with lovely clothing from Tibi, Nanette Lepore and – if it’s my lucky day- some Cynthia Vincent wedges (sigh). I

applaud the Orlando area for their community spirit and kudos to TUNI for getting my vote for the best GO Magic window.

This display rocks, literally. A music theme is a simple display to create. The props are easily located and music is never out of style. This display at Pitter Patter children’s store in Bath, Maine, does not need props, though. The onesies and shirts set the theme and too many props could distract from the merchandise.

Speaking of music displays, several drums and guitar amps are the perfect props for the rock band t-shirts folded neatly on the tiered tables in this next picture.

There’s a store in Illinois with a rockin’ decor. You can’t tell in this picture, below, but they have great rock star artwork and even have vintage Rolling Stone Magazines on their coffee table. With a large selection of jeans for men and women, Cityblue Apparel & Denim in Chicago displays one of the best ideas I have seen in a long while.

Cityblue Apparel & Denim, Retail Details blog, Chicago, IL

They use polaroid pictures to show what the jeans look like when “on”. You may be surprised what information a simple picture can provide: low rise or mid rise, loose fit or skinny, low or high pockets, straight leg or boot cut. They have these polaroids by their jean displays in both the men’s and women’s areas. I suspect this tool works well for their male customers, especially those who like to shop by waist size and not have to try anything on.

Props, ideas and inspirations: Retail Details blog, store display ideas

Notice the base for this eyeglasses display. It is simply a 12″ x 12″ sheet of mosaic tiles.  They are available in various colors and finishes. I’d like to see them lining the bottom shelf of a jewelry display case, perhaps in a shiny, irridescent finish. The mesh backing is easy to cut to custom fit the area you are trying to cover.

While at the home improvement store, you could visit the garden area to create this display for Store display ideas, Retail Details bloggrouping small items. The tiered metal piece adds height and the small terra cotta pots will not topple easily. Shown here, they are displaying beauty products in sample sizes, but it could make a nice display for loose beads and other crafting supplies, makeup brushes, wine bottle stoppers, etc.

If you have round racks for apparel in your store, I hope that you utilize the top space as a 360 round feature area. Store fixture companies sell rounder toppers in glass, wood and colored mica. Patty at the Wandering Wardrobe, in Springville, Utah, gets some of the selling space back by creating accessory displays above the clothing on her rounders.

This spring display uses a clear vase to feature a pair of shoes and a scarf. One common mistake is when retailers try to put too much merchandise on the rounder topper and it looks cluttered. If you really need to pile stuff up there, get the round wire basket topper instead. The round basket topper works best for loose items or for a clearance area.

Millers Too, Retail Details blog

Millers Too - Bonner Springs, KS

Small step ladders are a common display prop.  Millers Too in Bonner Springs, Kansas, uses one to create a display of cleaning products. They have a nice sign from the vendor that ties the display together. It creates it’s own small department, which works well for gift, accessory and home decor stores. Ask your sales reps or contact vendors for signage and other promo materials. Sometimes they have entire display fixtures available for a nominal fee or possibly free with a sizable Retail Details blog, earring display, ladder displaypurchase.  Showrooms are a great source for such ideas.

Here’s a similar step ladder, but this one has been decoupaged and some hook lace added to create an earring display.

Retail Details blogThis one’s just to make you smile. It’s an actual store display for the Poo Pourri bathroom spray deodorizer. (Full size toilet).

When I walk up and down the aisles of trade shows and wholesale markets, I look for display ideas and inspirations. I went to the ASD Gift Show in Las Vegas and found a number of great display pieces that retailers could purchase at wholesale,  just by meeting a small “minimum”. Here are a few that I found at the DeLeon Collections booth. Most of their products are sold in threes, but the larger items (like the red derrick) are sold singly.Retail Details blog, store display props Product showrooms in the merchandise marts are a favorite source for display ideas. You can ask the sales reps, showroom managers and vendor representatives for display ideas, signage and literature when you order their products.  Your sales reps may also have ideas from the many other stores that they visit. Many permanent product showrooms have a display team, so take note of their display ideas.  Thanks to the Just Got 2 Have It showroom in the Atlanta Americasmart for allowing me to share these two:

Is that a refrigerator door on your wall?

Exit 9, Retail Details blog, Swirl Marketing

Exit 9 Gift Emporium - Brooklyn, NY

Some call it a fridge. Grandma called it an icebox. The Swedes use a kylskap and the Germans keep their milk in a kuhlschrank. At Exit 9 Gift Emporium in Brooklyn, NY, they call it a display fixture.  It’s mounted right beside their book area and it displays their paper goods in a very cool way.

More doors in store: Something Special of Vincennes, IN, uses an old door as part of a 2-sided display featuring  colorful spring merchandise. Mounted atop a table, it not only serves as a divider, it provides height to the display and the “windows” keep it from obstructing the view.

Revolution Shop, Retail Details blog, store displaysOld doors get new life at Revolution Shop and A Details Shop, pictured above. In Charlotte, NC, Revolution Shop mounted hangrail between four weathered doors turning them into endposts  for clothing display. A Details Shop in Alpharetta, GA,  used them instead of drywall to form several fitting rooms in their store.

When Rachel of Trinket in Burlington, VT, saw the last blog about the removable chalkboard stickers, she decided to share her chalkboard wall with Retail Details. Against the black chalkboard paint, the white shadowbox frames and accents really stand out. Messages are easily changed and allow for an interesting way to feature items, as the “Hydrate in Style” picture shows.

In Play Showroom, Los Angeles Market Center

Showrooms at wholesale markets are another resource for display ideas. At the In Play Showroom in the Los Angeles Market Center, they have a PEACE themed window created with kids clothing and accessories that they represent.  Chances are you have your camera with you at market, so be sure to look for display ideas while you are searching for the perfect products for your stores.

To duplicate something similar in your shop, take notice of any themes – regardless of department or category. For instance, a music theme, “suns” for summer or ”flags” for 4th of July. Theme displays can also be built around events.

Hi Ho Home Market, Retail Details blog, Swirl MarketingAt Hi Ho Home Market, in Gardiner, NY, Heidi has a “Honey of a Weekend” event in February. She creates theme displays of bees and honey products featuring the honey from a local honey supplier, Widmark Farms. This year, she had a special “prop” – a honey cake (note the chocolate bees:-)  made by The Village Tearoom and Bake Shop, another business in the Hudson Valley. By the way, the black/white checked base under the cake is the top to a hat box, placed over a pedestal cake plate. Love it!

Cupcake Baby Boutique - Santa Rosa, CA

Speaking of props, I like when seasonal props provide more than just a decorative purpose. The wheelbarrow in this bunny display at Cupcake of Santa Rosa, CA, holds a nice amount of product. Also of note in this picture, is the quilt rack that appears to be modified to display tutus. I suspect it is a very versatile display piece.

You may want to PRINT THIS LIST: door knobs, maps, drawer pulls, record albums, trophies and suitcases. If you take this list with you when you shop for props, you should have a very productive shopping trip at garage sales, tag sales and thrift stores. Of course, you can buy these products new, but that’s not as inspiring. Here are some examples of what you can do with the items on your shopping list…

If you look closely at the large peace sign in this window at CoCo An Experience,  Inc. in Montclair, NJ, you may notice that it is covered with maps.  Is it ironically peace on earth or earth on peace?

I saved, for last, the most common, versatile and effective display prop of all time, suitcases. I devote the rest of  this blog to showcasing different ways of using suitcases for many types or products in all types of stores. Romualdo, a men’s store in Madeira, OH, uses a trunk as the base of one display and they stack briefcases amongst product on their shelves.

Street Chic Boutique, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl MarketingStreet Chic Boutique in Northbrook, IL, stacked colorful hat box suitcases in their window and perched a seated mannequin on top. Of note is how this display looks good from the back as well. That can be a challenge with store windows.

Cases in varying shapes and sizes add nicely to the vintage props in this display at Ziezo in St. Louis, MO.

Curtsy Bella, Solid Gold Boutique, Retail Details blog, store displays, Swirl MarketingIn that same vein, Curtsy Bella in Seattle, WA created a multi-purpose display out of a steamer trunk and Solid Gold Boutique of Austin, TX, uses a train case to contain feathered headbands – a tricky item to display.

With sand as a stabilizer, Bella Nola, in New Orleans, LA, uses a suitcase as a display for coasters and tiles. Geaux suitcase!

In St. Louis, MO, Rue Lafayette stacks boxes of tea in a vintage case which brings together the gift shop and cafe parts of the shop.

Edit Shoppe in Alberta, Canada, uses a “going to grandmas” sized case to contain a mix of colorful socks.

“Chalk” one up to spring fever

Friday, February 12th, 2010
Winter is hardly behind us, but the delivery boxes are full of spring merchandise. It’s time to pack away the snowflakes, valentine hearts and mardi gras beads and dig out the flowers, shamrocks and colored eggs.  Retail Details BlogIf you want to have some fun, plan a Dr. Seuss window to celebrate his birthday in early March. It’s all about the props. I enjoy finding fun and economical props. If you have ideas for displays and need props, send me a message. It’s likely that I have sources that I’ll be happy to share.

Paper lanterns are a popular prop. They are inexpensive and easy to work with. They come in various shapes and colors for all seasons. They collapse for easy storage and are simple in shape, so they do not distract from your merchandise. Pictured here, Sabella Couture, in Boston, combines paper lanterns with oversized flowers to create this wedding window. Once the window catches your eye, you look closer to see the detail of the long-stemmed flowers gracing the skirt of a wire form.  Lovely.

Frocks Boutique - Addison, TX

I was unsure whether this was a headboard or a fence part, so Ashley from Frocks Boutique in Addison, TX, clarified for me. It’s part of fence. The fence is visible from outside too, making it a dual display. Two-sided displays can be tricky. Have you shopped at home improvement stores for displays?

Inspiration boards may serve several purposes. Used as a bulletin board, staff and customers can see fashion trends and current

merchandise in magazine features and ad copy. They can provide ideas about how to put outfits together and also stress the fact that your products are “in style”. In a previous blog post, we discussed the impact of celebrity sightings and their possible impact on your customer. Yes, you are giving up valuable wall space to hang an inspiration board, but it serves as advertising  if you do as Crush Boutique of Boston does, and show press clippings of your store in print.

Store Displays for Belts, Bags & Baubles

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

I’m a big fan of the display hook. Slatwall hooks and S-hooks have their place in visual merchandising, but decorative hooks can make most  displays look richer.

Nest Interiors - Nashville, TN

This week, I have a new favorite display hook. It’s a hand and I like it hung palm up, palm down and sideways – exactly as they use them at Nest Interiors in Nashville, Tennessee. Made of coated iron with a distressed patina finish, Nest uses these hands for a wall display of handbags. Also, spotted at Nest Interiors is an example of a product feature page. Framed and placed beside the products, the glossy page explains the craftsmanship and materials that make the product unique. This is similar to the prior blog discussion about showing magazine pages with your merchandise featured (from Retail Details 1-10-10 blog).

Sofia Vintage - Chicago, IL

Continuing with my hook obsession, Sofia Vintage in Chicago, Illinois combines utility with branding by using these alphabet letter hooks. They are the perfect size to draw attention without minimizing the merchandise – in this case, purses. Vintage purses are frequently objects of art and deserving of distinctive hooks.

Vases and clear glass containers are a

Salt of The Earth - St. Louis & Webster Groves, MO

versatile staple in a visual merchandiser’s prop collection. Pictured here, the containers almost disappear while featuring the jewelry in a very dimensional way. This display designer at Salt of the Earth in St. Louis and Webster Grove, MO., chose the perfect backdrop to enhance each color story. Compliment versus contrast works here.

Stella Boutique - Laguna Beach, CA

Stella Boutique in Laguna Beach, California, also uses a tall glass display vessel. This time it serves as a container for a normally untidy item to display – belts. I seldom see a unique belt display. Yes, that’s a challenge. I’ll await your emails with pics attached.

Thanks to all of you who have forwarded my blog to your friends and colleagues and joined the fan page on Facebook. Readership has more than doubled in the last month. You continue to send in worthy displays and I will share as many as the topics, space and time allow. Leave your comments below, including suggestions for future retail display blog topics, questions and merchandising challenges.
