Store displays in Stockholm – part 2

We had picture perfect weather for our visit in Sweden earlier this month. The parks were filled with families enjoying the warm weather and the shop windows were starting to look like summer – or SOMMAR, as they call it.

The floor of the store window at SCAMPI in Stockholm is covered with a woven, natural rope rug. It becomes a perfect base for a beach window featuring their mix and match swimsuit separates. Hovering above the display are colorful birds hung with ropes. This is an excellent example of texture and color use in display.

Fence lacing at Odd Molly:

Odd Molly is known for their creative store interiors. The Stockholm store has chain link fencing in the windows and it has been enhanced with a procedure called “lacing”. It is an eye-catching, clever process that provides two-sided display and works well in windows, as well as against walls.

Father’s Day is not in June in Sweden, but we stumbled upon this menswear display window. The frames were filled with scrunched white fabric for a very interesting effect.

The Nordic Museum was having a Fashion Exhibition. In conjunction with the museum show, a local shopping mall, Sture Gallerian, had a dandy exhibit.

At the entrance to each store, a pedestal was placed with signage promoting the dandy theme. Atop each pedestal was a glass dome and each store created a vignette display featuring items from their store.

At least 30 shops had the display domes and it was a pleasant added feature for our mall tour.

I returned from Sweden to head to Dallas for the gift show. I’ll post some display ideas from Dallas showrooms soon.

Tree “skirt” and store display tables

Is it time to pull your mannequins from the window displays to make room for a Christmas tree? Or not?

Tall sprays of greenery and a few red ornaments add a holiday feel to a table of  stark white serving pieces. It’s just the right amount of color and shows up well against the primarily white place setting displays in the background at The Pine Needle in Dalton, GA.

Retail Details visual merchandising blog, store display ideasWhat has icicles, 88 keys, but no locks? A winter piano display. I’m not usually a big fan of felt, but it has just the right texture for the snowy lid of this grand piano. Does anyone know where I can get those suspended clear globes??

MY SUIT – New York, NY

In a made-to-measure men’s suit store, you expect to choose between single or double breasted, two buttons or three, pleated or flat front, buttons or cuff-links,  but at My Suit in New York City, you can choose the vest as shown on the orange or on the blue mannequin. WHAT? (insert sound effect *here* tires screeching to a halt). Brightly colored mannequins in a men’s tailor shop? Absolutely, if done correctly. The poses are the key to this mannequin success story at My Suit.  Maybe the Yankee’s won or the DOW is up, but these mannequins are pumped up and ready to celebrate amidst a world of navy, black and gray. It’s refreshing to see a modern store design in this fashion genre. Hat tip to the store designers and visual merchandisers! (Cue the theme from Rocky *here*).

Home decor stores, florists and gift shops struggle with clear glass containers and how to display them. A few ideas to consider:

Flowers, fruits and vegetables bring life to clear glass vases, bowls, cylinders, pitchers and other glass vessels whether they are part of your product mix or used as display props to enhance other merchandise. With apologies, in advance, to my friend J M.H. Schwanke over at UBloom, you can use fresh or faux fruit, flowers & veggies. Use fresh if you are able to monitor and change the display frequently or you can use paraffin oil to preserve the items if you are displaying them submerged. Another idea is to use obviously “fake” products like sparkly glass apples or cloth tomatoes. I am currently researching faux food display prop sources for the guys at The Display Lab. Retail Details - At Mary's - Store display blog, October 2010

Which way is up? I look through a lot of pictures every week. You are all so kind to send them via email or link me to your facebook albums. I get so excited when I see the same prop in various settings and configurations. In this case, At Mary’s, a “much-more-than-just-gifts” shop in Bardstown, KY, features china inside a crown – or is it a cake plate? In good visual merchandising, there are no labels. Intended uses can be ignored. Be creative. Disregard “this side up” stickers.

Retail Details - Unique Expressions - Store display blog, October 2010 Fence posts, cut in various lengths make up these  jewelry displays at UniquExpressions in Pine Mountain, GA. It’s such a simple way to create texture and height in a display and I like that they are used vertically and horizontally. I especially appreciate the way the watch bands are featured more prominently as they are positioned around the posts.

Brussels Sprouts – Newton, MA

Three mannequin forms. Three clothing colors. It’s not a display rule, but it is an effective technique as shown at Brussels Sprouts Kids in Newton, MA. Actually, there are numerous things “done right” in this display. Note that the are skirts are placed on both sides with pants in the middle. Note that the center form is taller. Note how the outerwear, both in black, bookends the display story.

The Painted Door in Oklahoma City shows a little whimsy in this display of bracelets and watches. Besides, why display on two arms, when you can use eight?  This is a fun example of a full-round display, as well.

Retail Details - Amberella - Store display blog

 In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’ve been waiting to share Amberella with my blog readers. Amberella Gallery and Boutique  in Philadelphia, PA takes their pink so seriously that they painted ALL their display items – furniture, fixtures, frames, forms and even the floor - PINK. Perhaps it’s not the right shade for everyone, but it certainly has impact. Gotta love a shop with personality!

Taming the Tulle and Inspired Store Displays

It takes alot to get from my blog photo files to my pinboard. After all, my job is to look at hundreds of pictures everyday. I reserve one side of my pinboard for WOW pictures and the other for items that inspire store display ideas. This mannequin picture has been on the WOW side for weeks. Taken at the New York Int’l Gift Fair, it’s from the Alice Supply Company booth.  The products, which include common household items that have been given a personality, are cute, fun and colorful and generally easy to show. This display takes it to the next level by creating a top out of a garden hose and a skirt of dust pans. Once again, trade shows prove to be a great place for visual merchandising ideas. 

Vintage, antique and thrift stores have a selection of salt and pepper shakers. Unless you are a collector, you probably seldom notice them.

That’s about to change! At Relish in Healdsburg, CA, the bottles are filled with pearls, sparkly star beads and shiny buttons. Elegant. Inspired. Upcycled. They even come with printed “pearls of wisdom”.

Swiss Flower and Gift Cottage - Wheat Ridge, CO

Floral shops have the luxury of having beautiful merchandise that essentially becomes it’s own display. You may think that merchandising in a floral shop is easy, but it has it’s challenges. For instance, how to display boutonnieres and corsages, other than in those clear “take-out” type boxes.  At Swiss Flower and Gift Cottage, in Wheat Ridge, CO, they utilize a few props. Problem solved!

Tutus. Now here’s a fashion trend that I did not see coming. But, it’s here and they are a mess… to display, that is. I found these pictures of two displays that seem to tame the tulle. Lavish in Crested Butte, CO, features one skirt on a hanger and rolls the others, neatly hanging them on what could easily be a towel rack. On the right, a quilt rack seems to be the ideal size to become a designated tutu fixture at Cupcake in Santa Rosa, CA.

Green Oak Antiques - Rochester, IN

When Green Oak Antiques, of Rochester, Indiana, received a large shipment of  a new line of plaques, they didn’t want to place them in a cabinet or on a busy wall. They had a bunch of fence pieces, already painted white, so they nailed them to the wall, placed a bench below and voila  a feature display!

Pantone’s color of the year for 2010 is turquoise. Stark white display pieces are ideal to spotlight this color in a spring window display.

For these store windows, above, the ladies at Lilac Bijoux in Annapolis, MD, chose clothing with the turquoise color in common. They added accessories that match and suspended large paper flowers to complete the spring motif.

Sabella Couture - Boston, MA

Ideally, your store windows also look good from the inside of your shop. This is not so easy to do. If you have a backdrop, you can create an additional in-store display on the back of it. When you don’t have a backdrop, you may choose props that are two-sided or round help to create an attractive interior display. Sabella Couture, in Boston, MA, uses paper lanterns, parasols and flowers to achieve this.

Inspiration display of the week:

Bits & Pieces Boutique – Richmond, VA

These two window displays were from last fall and holiday season at Bits & Pieces Boutique in Richmond, VA. When looking for display props, it helps to plan ahead in case you need to locate and assemble items into displays as creative as these mannequins with chandeliers on their heads.  I particularly like the gourds that almost look like flames in the fall picture on the left. Such lighting fixtures are not hard to find, especially since you do not need them to actually work. With a little spray paint and some decorative crystals, you could create similar chandeliers to fit most any theme. The trick to successful prop shopping is to plan ahead and to always be looking for display pieces, wherever you go.

Next month, I’ll be prop shopping with some retailers at the Dallas Total Home & Gift show.  I’m sure I’ll have lots of ideas to share on the blog.
