Natural elements in store displays

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Visual merchandising with natural elements is popular in all types of retail stores and for catalog photography staging.

Tweed Baby Outfitters uses branches as fixture bars for hanging apparel and stumps for display risers for shoes. This store for babies and toddlers is located in the popular shopping area of Edgehill Village in Nashville TN.

These unique wall displays for jewelry at Umba Creative Coop in Boulder CO, are made from bark pieces, twigs and stump slices.

Felt birds and acorn bookends fit well in the merchandise mix with jewelry on branches in this display window at Trinket in Burlington VT.

Floral, greenery and shells are strategically placed in the jewelry and accessory display cabinets at Details in Winter Park FL.

Vintage props and dried flowers create a lovely vignette for this blue pottery display at The Farmhouse Store in Westfield NJ.

Suitcase walls and shoe displays – a visual merchandising blog

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

It’s been a busy summer for Retail Details. From mid-June in Dallas to this past week in New York, gift shows filled my calendar. Between shows I was able to visit some lovely shops and as always, my inbox is full with the display pictures that you email to me from all over the world. Thanks. Enjoy. Stay display inspired!

At Stella and Sway, this fall brings the introduction of a shoe department to the boutique in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Owner, Karey Kapell shopped all over the city to locate interesting vintage boxes to create the shoe wall.

While in Central Florida for the Orlando Gift Show, I visited one of my favorite shopping destinations, Winter Park. Be On Park is a jewelry store along Park Avenue. Their collections incorporate elements and textures found in nature, just like their window display. The rope rug set the groundscape for rocks, starfish, grasses and branches, but they added a shadowbox painted turquoise and orange which created an eye-catching contrast. I stopped for a second look and crossed my fingers that the window glare would allow my photo to come out clearly, so I could share.

Just a few miles away, in Orlando, is a cute shop that I found on Facebook, The Pink Chalet. I already shared a few of their display pictures on the Retail Details Facebook Page, but saved this special one for the blog. This custom fixture is a shelving unit on the front and apparel rack on the back. It is the perfect height and scale for the shop. This fixture is designed to maximize display space and as you can see in these two pictures, it succeeds.

Front and center at the Orlando Gift Show was the booth of Exotic Recovery home fragrance products. It smelled terrific and the huge silver palm trees reflected light drawing me to the booth like a neon sign. The palm fronds appeared to be made from something between silver lame’ fabric and heavy-duty aluminum foil, only textured; almost quilted. The trunk of these trees were obviously made of coil tubing that contracts for easy storage and travel. Oversized props at trade shows always amaze me as I can only imagine the logistics of transporting and setting them up in a small area that usually has no fixed walls.

Molly Hannon knows the gift business, inside and out. She is a sales repre-sentative for Southeast Marketing. During markets, you can find her working in showrooms at the Americasmart in Atlanta. For over 20 years, though, Molly has been a retailer. She owns Potpourri Antiques and Molly’s Paperie in Lake Alfred, FL.  I was pleased to catch her in the shop on a recent Saturday morning and Molly graciously showed me around her shop. The two-room store is a lovely mix of old and new with beautiful woodwork. Antiques, like this scale, serve as display props for gifts, jewelry, home accessories and stationery.

Old suitcases cover the entire wall behind the reception desk at the Urbn Hotel in Shanghai, China. They are strategically placed, almost flush, except for some hinges and a few handles. This could be replicated to create a display wall in a retail store. The handles and hinges could serve as hooks. On a smaller scale (using train case lids, perhaps?) the handles would be ideal for displaying jewelry, belts and scarves. Briefcase handles for neckties? This, my friends, is what I mean by display inspired :-)

Showrooms, inspired visual merchandising, fun store displays and retail celebrations!

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

It’s Gift Show Season! All the marts are buzzing with activity as buyers visit showrooms, order new product, attend seminars, make contacts and look for display ideas. Manufacturers, vendors, showroom and booth designers put immense thought and effort into their visual merchandising. Retailers can take note of this hard work and use the displays as inspiration back in their own stores. Here are recent pictures from showrooms in Atlanta and Dallas.

Stay display inspired!

Retail Details Blog, Global Views SAT3, store display, visual merchandisingIf you want a lesson in effective use of color in visual merchandising, visit a showroom that carries Global Views products. Their showroom displays are a feast for my eyes. You can see them in Dallas, New York, High Point, Las Vegas and Atlanta. These two pictures are from their area inside the Southern Accessories Today showroom in the Americasmart in Atlanta.

One challenge that faces showroom designers – even more than at the retail level – is having to display various seasons at once. Color stories can help differentiate the delivery seasons, as shown here by Scene Weaver at  the OneCoast showroom  in Atlanta.

Retail Details Blog, OneCoast Mudpie, store display, visual merchandisingSometimes single colors are the best way to make a statement. This is particularly effective when displaying a collection such as this pink grouping by Mud Pie in the OneCoast showroom in Atlanta. And how cute is that ice cream cone made of petticoat fabric on the wall? This next picture, from the same showroom, uses cloud props and what could be a twin-size headboard on the wall.

Retail Details Blog, Bentleys Reserve OneCoast, store display, visual merchandisingBentley’s Reserve makes the most of their cubical fixtures – shown here before and after stocking it in the OneCoast showroom in Dallas. Notice the placement of product, signage and literature throughout the shelves. The addition of baskets in the lowest cubes give the bottom weight for a balanced display. They created some eye relief by leaving a few cubes empty except for the deco-words Eat and Enjoy. This is an extraordinary display example!

A few more display examples from the Southern Accessories Today showroom in Atlanta:

Retail Details Blog, Global Views SAT1, store display, visual merchandisingOnce again, their use of color and merchandise arrangement shows a nice blend of mixing metals and a little pop of color. The result allows the white products to really stand out! Product areas are Dwell Studio and Studio A.

Shopping in Stockholm, part 3:

Retail Details Blog, Accessorize Stockholm, store display, visual merchandisingLife preservers have always made good props for resort and spring displays, but the colors, stripes and dots on these took this visual merchandising staple to a new level. These two displays at ACCESSORIZE immediately caught my eye on my way to tour a retail store elsewhere in Stockholm. The background graphics were quite nice, as well. I wish I had taken a picture from further back to get the full effect of this display story. To read/view parts 1 and 2 of the Stockholm Sweden displays, click here and it will open in a new window.

Congratulations to HiHo Home Market:

Retail Details Blog, Hiho Home Market, store display, visual merchandisingRetail Details & Swirl Marketing send our warmest congratulations to our friends at HiHo Home Market as they celebrate being named Country Business Magazine’s2011 Retailer of the Year!  Last fall, on a retail tour through Connecticut and New York, we were lucky enough to visit HiHo Home Market in Gardiner, NY. It is a lovely shop filled with an eclectic mix of current and vintage merchandise. Upstairs there is a room dedicated to Christmas year-round. The owner, Heidi Hill-Haddard has a true talent for visual merchandising and all 15 rooms have imaginative displays that change often. In fact, they were a finalist in our New Year Store Display contest earlier this year. We have featured HiHo Home displays in the blog several times in the last few years and look forward to sharing more in the future!

Stay display inspired!

Three beds, some scales and a bar of soap

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Fitts Company, Walla Walla, Retail Details blog, Visual merchandisingIf you are like me, your Mom told you to keep your shoes off the bed. I don’t think the rule applies to this retail display at Fitts and Company in Walla Walla, WA. Here are three displays where the retailers take advantage of the sleep space to show off more than linens. HiHo Home Market, in Gardiner in the Hudson Valley, NY, has numerous themed rooms and this bedroom contains an interesting product mix, combining old and new merchandise in a display built around a black and white theme. The Miller House, a home decor and interior design shop, features linens, books, fragrance sprays and flowers in a cozy bed display at the shop in Stephens City, VA.

Sweet Anthem Jewelry, Retail Details blog, Visual merchandising, store displayAt Sweet Anthem Jewelry in Salem, MA, painted driftwood serves as accessory displays for belts and jewelry. Natural elements are a popular display trend and this one is cleverly assembled.

Craftland, Retail Details blog, Visual merchandisingPink fabric is strategically placed beneath rectangles of plexiglass on this jewelry display table at Craftland Shop in Providence, RI. This is my favorite idea of the week and I appreciate the way they used varying sizes of plexiglass and staggered the sizes of the colored fabric, as well. Very effective technique. Numerous possibilities.

Home Design Studio, Columbus, TX, Retail Details blog, Visual merchandising, store displayDisplay tip: Note how this presentation has several bars of soap unwrapped within the display.  This makes it very clear what is in the lovely packaging and exhibits the fact that different colors are available. Thanks to Home Design Studio in Columbus, TX,  for sharing an example of this display technique.

Cake Vintage, Nashville, Retail Details blog, Visual merchandisingUnless you are new to the Retail Details blog, you likely know of my love of and obsession with visual merchandising props and there-fore explains my other job as a prop shopper and display designer for The Display Lab. One of my favorite props are scales. I like this hanging scale in a display at Cake Vintage in Nashville, Tennessee. There is something quite pleasant about mixing the industrial look of the scale with the delicate teacups and such “odd mixtures” catch a customer’s eye.

Patina Green, Retail Details blog, Visual merchandising, store displayIn a more traditional scenario, a scale displays vegetables at Patina Green Home and Market in McKinney, TX. I love how they mixed wire, wood and straw baskets, the usage of differing heights within the display and the consistent, appropriate signage. Well done!

Thanks for reading the Retail Details blog. I hope you will join me as we continue the conversation and share display ideas on Facebook (Retail Details Blog) and Twitter(@Retail_Details). I invite you to submit display pictures to be considered for blog inclusion. You can email pictures to SwirlMarketing(at)comcast(dot)net. Be sure to include your store location and website information. I visit hundreds of stores every year and may be in your area later in 2011. Retail Details loves to shop local!

Over the next few months, I will be having a few guest bloggers write for the Retail Details blog. Contact me if you’d like to be considered. I have two spots open at this time.

Stay display inspired!
