Displayvorites: staff picks, store displays

Monday, September 19th, 2011

We love visual merchandising! Retail Details blog reviews hundreds of store display pictures every week. In this bonus blog post we share a few favorites.

Chelsea’s pick:

This is one of Chelsea’s favorite displays at the Baglady Boutique in Springfield, MO. The bed is an old twin bed, painted a beautiful shade of brick red. They change the bed and accessories to match the season or to showcase new bedding designs. Additional quilts are hung on the wall in a way that encourages customers to touch them and to see the reverse sides. Accessories are displayed on the bed and numerous rugs peek out from beneath.

Chelsea Redfern is an intern at The Retail Details blog and is a visual merchandising princess ;-)

Becky’s pick:

There are no fashion faux paws in Naples, Florida, because the pampered pets are outfitted from Pucci & Catana Luxury Pet Boutique. Their pet beds, food dishes and water bowls are displayed in a white wall unit worthy of the designer handbags in surrounding stores in the upscale shopping area known as Fifth Avenue South.

Visit the Retail Details Facebook Page for many more display examples and stay updated by joining us on Twitter, too.

Stay display inspired!

Product as the primary focus in visual merchandising, store displays and trade show booth examples

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Visual merchandising pictorial: the product as the primary focus. Enter Sockerbit, which means “sugar cube” in Swedish. On Christopher Street in the West Village area of New York City, the owners of Sockerbit designed a clean, open, white retail space where the center of attention would be the sweets – their colors and shapes. The store has all white cabinetry and the candies are in clear bins allowing the product to be the primary focus. The Sockerbit shop keeps things sweet, simple and Swedish!

From the New York International Gift Fair, August 2011:

Black electrical tape was used to simulate shelves in the booth of Lazy Oaf, a brand from the UK, exhibiting at the NYIGF. The clever, almost comical, booth design, sets the tone for the fun cards and accessories on display in the booth. It looked even more 3-D in person. This booth was as eye-catching as many of the booths that had much more elaborate displays. Once again, the focus is on featuring the product.

It was not the first NYIGF show for Wakami, but it was the first time they had their own booth. Nice job!

This blog post opened with a Swedish store in the US, so sharing displays from an American store in Stockholm is only fitting – and represents the summer of Retail Details travels.

Woolrich offers men’s and women’s clothing that has embraced the outdoor lifestyle since 1830.

I’ve always enjoyed how their displays fit the theme of being the “Original Outdoor Clothing Company”.

Their small store in Stockholm is no exception. The industrial fixtures and concrete floors are softened by the use of their signature displays of books.

Suitcase walls and shoe displays – a visual merchandising blog

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

It’s been a busy summer for Retail Details. From mid-June in Dallas to this past week in New York, gift shows filled my calendar. Between shows I was able to visit some lovely shops and as always, my inbox is full with the display pictures that you email to me from all over the world. Thanks. Enjoy. Stay display inspired!

At Stella and Sway, this fall brings the introduction of a shoe department to the boutique in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Owner, Karey Kapell shopped all over the city to locate interesting vintage boxes to create the shoe wall.

While in Central Florida for the Orlando Gift Show, I visited one of my favorite shopping destinations, Winter Park. Be On Park is a jewelry store along Park Avenue. Their collections incorporate elements and textures found in nature, just like their window display. The rope rug set the groundscape for rocks, starfish, grasses and branches, but they added a shadowbox painted turquoise and orange which created an eye-catching contrast. I stopped for a second look and crossed my fingers that the window glare would allow my photo to come out clearly, so I could share.

Just a few miles away, in Orlando, is a cute shop that I found on Facebook, The Pink Chalet. I already shared a few of their display pictures on the Retail Details Facebook Page, but saved this special one for the blog. This custom fixture is a shelving unit on the front and apparel rack on the back. It is the perfect height and scale for the shop. This fixture is designed to maximize display space and as you can see in these two pictures, it succeeds.

Front and center at the Orlando Gift Show was the booth of Exotic Recovery home fragrance products. It smelled terrific and the huge silver palm trees reflected light drawing me to the booth like a neon sign. The palm fronds appeared to be made from something between silver lame’ fabric and heavy-duty aluminum foil, only textured; almost quilted. The trunk of these trees were obviously made of coil tubing that contracts for easy storage and travel. Oversized props at trade shows always amaze me as I can only imagine the logistics of transporting and setting them up in a small area that usually has no fixed walls.

Molly Hannon knows the gift business, inside and out. She is a sales repre-sentative for Southeast Marketing. During markets, you can find her working in showrooms at the Americasmart in Atlanta. For over 20 years, though, Molly has been a retailer. She owns Potpourri Antiques and Molly’s Paperie in Lake Alfred, FL.  I was pleased to catch her in the shop on a recent Saturday morning and Molly graciously showed me around her shop. The two-room store is a lovely mix of old and new with beautiful woodwork. Antiques, like this scale, serve as display props for gifts, jewelry, home accessories and stationery.

Old suitcases cover the entire wall behind the reception desk at the Urbn Hotel in Shanghai, China. They are strategically placed, almost flush, except for some hinges and a few handles. This could be replicated to create a display wall in a retail store. The handles and hinges could serve as hooks. On a smaller scale (using train case lids, perhaps?) the handles would be ideal for displaying jewelry, belts and scarves. Briefcase handles for neckties? This, my friends, is what I mean by display inspired :-)

Summer store displays and Retail Details blog news

Friday, July 29th, 2011

I’m convinced that whoever wrote the song about the lazy days of summer was not in the wholesale or retail gift business. Not in the United States, at least.  The summer gift shows are in full swing and keeping the buyers and showroom staff and reps quite busy. I’ll be at the Orlando Gift Show on Sat., 8/6 and then off to New York for the NYIGF show that begins the following weekend. Watch for my Retail Details press badge and I hope you’ll stop me to say Hi. Scroll down for some fun news at the end of this blog post.

Summer Displays:

Oars are used as hang rails in this summer display at Periwinkle of Potomac Greens in Alexandria, VA. Suspended with boat rope, the oars are the right diameter for hangers and make a clever display in their swimwear area.

Porter Square Books is an independent bookstore in Cambridge, MA. They always do a nice job of creating displays around holidays and various themes, like gardening, movies or events like poetry month or graduation. They have several summer displays, one that features books about traveling around New England, which became a store event in June. Their “book it to the beach” display is complete with a sand castle and books for all ages.
Rice is a Danish homewares and accessories company, known best for their colorful melamine and storage solutions that are fun and functional. They sponsor store display contests for their retail customers worldwide. This company REALLY encourages creative retail visual merchandising and I will be featuring more of their stores in the future. This summer display is from the Rice Ting Bergen store in Norway. The mini-fridge is just the right size for the kids summer snack containers. It catches the eye by being painted bright green, inside and out.
This display at Hollies on the Avenue has a sophisticated, natural, beachy feel. Hollies is a specialty shop for gifts, home accents, and “surprises” in Barrington, RI, and caters to residents and visitors.
Showroom Displays:
A great source of display inspirations, showrooms at the markets are a proven resource for display ideas.
This scarf display is in the Lindsay Phillips area of the OneCoast showrooms.  A rope ladder display can be a versatile piece for presenting merchandise. Neutral in color, it shows up well against a color wall, as shown here, but is not distracting. Another version are the rope ladders that are available at boat stores and bring a nautical theme to a summer display.
Some displays use props and some are products on traditional fixtures. At the Greenleaf Gifts showrooms in Atlanta and Dallas, they built some props out of their product.
They used sachet packets for the scent Velvet Woods, adding feathers to construct these colorful peacocks in their showroom windows.  They turned out great and caused quite a buzz around the marts.
Announcement:
Please join me in welcoming Chelsea Redfern, who recently joined Retail Details as an intern. Chelsea is in her last year of college and will graduate with a BA in Marketing, Advertising and PR. Chelsea manages her Mom’s shop, Baglady Boutique, in Springfield, MO. Chelsea grew up in the retail business.
In her own words:
“When I’m not at the shop, I love to create in the kitchen or get lost in the midst of a fashion or foodie blog. I took this internship with Becky because I thought it would be a great experience for me to work with two things I love: blogs and retail. I’m very excited to learn from her and this experience. So, in short, I’m a 20-something aspiring shop girl who in the midst of trying to finish college also lives the life of a fashionista, chef, blogger, daughter & friend.”
Chelsea will be contributing to the blog and helping to plan our next store display contest. She will research and analyze displays and also help me with research for my other writing assignments. I am thrilled to have Chelsea on the Retail Details team and look forward to her perspective, ideas and retail knowledge.
