store display ideas, visual merchandising, retail details blog,At Retail Details we LOVE window display competitions. Becky frequently judges display contests and consults for retail stores and showrooms. This display is one of the winners from a competition sponsored by Skunkfunk. This window took second place and the store is Barabu’ in Madrid, Spain. Swings are a fun merchandising staple for spring and summer displays. The key to the success of this window is a single focus color, yellow.

Best Buddies Dog Boutique, St. Pete Beach, FL, Retail Details blog visual merchandisingBest Buddies Dog Boutique used a swing in their spring window in St. Pete Beach, FL. The swing hangs from a beautifully constructed window tree. The caninequins are looking out the window so realistically, you almost expect to see nose prints on the glass!

Once again, a single color is featured and this time it is the orange that is so popular this year. Pantone has named Tangerine Tango as the Color of the Year for 2012.

Kathleens Gallery, Tryon, NC, store display ideas, visual merchandising, retail details blog,Sometimes clients and friends post display idea requests on our facebook page. Silk, spring scarves were the latest display challenge from Kathleen’s Gallery in Tryon, NC. We suggested wine bottles with the scarves flowing out of them and this is what they did with it. Suspending the bottles in the air was a great interpretation of the idea and created an eye-catching window. This is what “Stay display inspired!” is all about!

Lamb & Flag, store display ideas, visual merchandising, retail details blog,Another frequent request is for creative denim display ideas, so here’s one of our favorite jeans displays from Lamb & Flag in Brea, CA.

Southern Sisters & The Paper Fairy, Grayson, GAT-shirts can be a real display challenge and Southern Sisters and The Paper Fairy found a solution with this fixture that shows the color and design choices in a prominent manner. The t-shirts are rolled and stocked beside each design in the shop in Grayson, GA.

Mercy Hospital Gift Shop in Springfield, MO, store display ideas, visual merchandising, retail details blog,The best display props are ones that can be used in multiple display scenarios. The Mercy Hospital Gift Shop in Springfield, MO uses a white lantern as a prop for tabletop displays. They filled it with flowers and fruit for two different colorful spring displays.

HomeArt, store display ideas, visual merchandising, retail details blogYou may have noticed quite a few pallets during the past year to accompany the repurposing trend in display props. This display utilizes grove baskets to hold merchandise in the HomArt showroom at AmericasMart in Atlanta, GA.

Store displays & visual merchandising winners

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Last September, the Retail Details blog announced the Retail Details New Year Store Display Contest. Over 40 stores entered and in January, four stores were chosen as the finalists. As promised, here are all the finalist entry photos.

HiHo Home Market is a delightful family owned shop, filled with old and new furnishings and treasures. Located in the beautiful Hudson Valley in Gardiner, NY.  As their finalist entry, they chose a black, white and pink theme and added an elephant, which made the judges smile at the irony of the pink elephant connotation in a New Year’s “cheers” theme. The judges commented that they really liked the use of color in this display.

The Miller House is a  unique shop with the very best home décor, gifts and furniture. They feature traditional to transitional design for your home. Judges  especially liked the attention to detail (ie: champagne glasses with watches) and enjoyed the continuity of a NEW YEAR’S time-based theme for the entire display.

A. Dodson’s is not just a store — it’s a destination. You’ll find this shop unpredictable, quirky, and alluring. Just outside of Norfolk, Virginia.  A Dodson’s is the first place winner in the contest.

Store display contest winners announced!

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Beginning in September, retail stores in the US were invited to submit pictures of their store displays for a visual merchandising competition that would culminate in the Retail Details New Year Store Display contest, which ended last week. 41 stores entered the contest. The finalists were chosen and each store received a box of props to incorporate into a final store display to be constructed during the first week of January in 2011. The participating finalists were HiHo Home Market in Gardiner, NY, Greetings from Geralyn in Asbury, NJ, A Dodson’s in Suffolk, VA, and The Miller House in Stephens City, VA. Prizes are awarded to the first and second place. And the winner is…

A Dodson’s. Congratulations!

Their display incorporated all the required elements and featured hundreds of strands of pearls and a live fish in a champagne flute. The judges felt that the A. Dodson’s display was the most effective in featuring the store’s merchandise while utilizing the provided contest props. They also agreed that color was used effectively and allowed for continuity in the display. A Dodson’s will receive a $250 gift certificate to use at Gully’s Store Fixtures. More A Dodson’s pics:
Second place goes to:
Greetings From Geralyn, congratulations!
Their display included all the required elements and they utilized the entire front of their shop (3 store windows) into their contest display. The judges liked the fact that Geralyn’s used the chandelier prop in two pieces, rather than as one unit. Greeting’s From Geralyn’s will receive a custom-designed display from The Display Lab.
Special thanks to the judges, J Schwanke of JTV and uBloom, Karen Benson of Karen L. Benson & Associates, and Justin Whittaker of DSW Shoes.
Thanks to all the participants and especially to the finalists. All finalists pictures will be featured in an upcoming blog post, but are currently available to view in photo albums on the Retail Details Facebook page. They ALL did a great job and will inspire many displays to come.
Stay display inspired!

Retail Details New Year Store Display Contest Finalists Announcement

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Since September, over 40 retail stores submitted pictures of their store displays for phase one of the Retail Details New Year Store Display Contest. Phase two starts right after Christmas. Congratulations to these five stores who have been chosen to participate:

The Miller House sells seasonal decor, hand-made furniture and home accessories in their single shop in the Shenandoah Valley area in Stephens, Virginia.

Peek… Aren’t You Curious sells children’s clothing in several shops in California, one in Scottsdale, Arizona and one in Dallas, Texas. They are known for using playground equipment as store fixtures.

HiHo Home Market  is a grand multi-level store with more than a dozen themed rooms filled with elaborate displays of home decor, old and new. Located in the Hudson Valley in Gardiner, New York.

Greetings From Geralyn opened in the summer of 2010. They sell cards, gourmet food, candy, gift wrap and scrapbooking supplies in a small shop in Asbury, New Jersey.

A Dodson’s is a destination shop in Suffolk, Virginia. They sell apparel, home furnishings and gifts that you may find unpredictable and quirky, as are their displays.

In a few weeks, each of the five finalist stores will receive an identical box of props to build a New Year’s display.  All displays will be judged on creativity, originality, product representation, and visual merchandising techniques. Finalists must use all provided props and may choose to add additional props when positioning and photographing their display design in either a store window or an in-store display. Judges will review the displays and the winners will be announced in mid-January. First prize is a $250 gift certificate from Gully’s Discount Store Fixtures. Second prize is a custom-designed store display from The Display Lab. Judges include experts in the areas of home decor, floral design, product development, and visual merchandising. Good luck and thanks to all who entered.

Special THANKS to the following sponsors, who are supplying prizes, props and advertising for the store display contest. Gully’s Discount Store Fixtures, The Display Lab, Midwest CBK, and Country Business Magazine.

Stay display inspired!
