store display ideas, visual merchandising, retail details blog,At Retail Details we LOVE window display competitions. Becky frequently judges display contests and consults for retail stores and showrooms. This display is one of the winners from a competition sponsored by Skunkfunk. This window took second place and the store is Barabu’ in Madrid, Spain. Swings are a fun merchandising staple for spring and summer displays. The key to the success of this window is a single focus color, yellow.

Silk, spring scarves were the latest display challenge from Kathleen’s Gallery in Tryon, NC. We suggested wine bottles with the scarves flowing out of them and this is what they did with it. Suspending the bottles in the air was a great interpretation of the idea and created an eye-catching window. This is what “Stay display inspired!” is all about!

Store displays & visual merchandising winners

Last September, the Retail Details blog announced the Retail Details New Year Store Display Contest. Over 40 stores entered and in January, four stores were chosen as the finalists. As promised, here are all the finalist entry photos.

HiHo Home Market is a delightful family owned shop, filled with old and new furnishings and treasures. Located in the beautiful Hudson Valley in Gardiner, NY.  As their finalist entry, they chose a black, white and pink theme and added an elephant, which made the judges smile at the irony of the pink elephant connotation in a New Year’s “cheers” theme. The judges commented that they really liked the use of color in this display.

The Miller House is a  unique shop with the very best home décor, gifts and furniture. They feature traditional to transitional design for your home. Judges  especially liked the attention to detail (ie: champagne glasses with watches) and enjoyed the continuity of a NEW YEAR’S time-based theme for the entire display.

A. Dodson’s is not just a store — it’s a destination. You’ll find this shop unpredictable, quirky, and alluring. Just outside of Norfolk, Virginia.  A Dodson’s is the first place winner in the contest.

Store display contest winners announced!

Beginning in September, retail stores in the US were invited to submit pictures of their store displays for a visual merchandising competition that would culminate in the Retail Details New Year Store Display contest, which ended last week. 41 stores entered the contest. The finalists were chosen and each store received a box of props to incorporate into a final store display to be constructed during the first week of January in 2011. The participating finalists were HiHo Home Market in Gardiner, NY, Greetings from Geralyn in Asbury, NJ, A Dodson’s in Suffolk, VA, and The Miller House in Stephens City, VA. Prizes are awarded to the first and second place. And the winner is…

A Dodson’s. Congratulations!

Their display incorporated all the required elements and featured hundreds of strands of pearls and a live fish in a champagne flute. The judges felt that the A. Dodson’s display was the most effective in featuring the store’s merchandise while utilizing the provided contest props. They also agreed that color was used effectively and allowed for continuity in the display. A Dodson’s will receive a $250 gift certificate to use at Gully’s Store Fixtures. More A Dodson’s pics:
Second place goes to:
Greetings From Geralyn, congratulations!
Their display included all the required elements and they utilized the entire front of their shop (3 store windows) into their contest display. The judges liked the fact that Geralyn’s used the chandelier prop in two pieces, rather than as one unit. Greeting’s From Geralyn’s will receive a custom-designed display from The Display Lab.
Special thanks to the judges, J Schwanke of JTV and uBloom, Karen Benson of Karen L. Benson & Associates, and Justin Whittaker of DSW Shoes.
Thanks to all the participants and especially to the finalists. All finalists pictures will be featured in an upcoming blog post, but are currently available to view in photo albums on the Retail Details Facebook page. They ALL did a great job and will inspire many displays to come.
Stay display inspired!
