Retail Art Installations

MNK Studio specializes in creating large scale experiential art installations that communicate a brand’s unique point of view. The exaggerated size of the exhibits not only bring attention to the retail space, but draw customers inside and encourage them to linger longer in the space.

This towering, handcrafted coral installation was inspired by Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year : Living Coral.

The display is located in BrandsWalk, a fashion tech accessories boutique that sells laptop bags, cell phones cases and high end speakers. The store is located in Downtown Los Angeles.

The installation was very labor intensive. Preparation in MNK’s Downtown Los Angeles Studio took 3 full days and consisted of custom paint and fabrication of all of the cone “branch” shapes, as well as painting and shaping the corrugated paper shapes. In-store installation took another 4 days which consisted of building a custom armature, more paint, and tons more folding, all the while assembling the actual display.

The intention was to introduce an organic element that brought color and warmth into what might otherwise feel like an industrial space. It’s a strategy that MNK worked closely to develop with the brand’s creative team.

MNK Studio also produced the Flower Fall installation using over 1200 flowers hung from the ceiling of the DTLA store BrandsWalk creating an immersive explosion of color and texture.

Stitched, Twisted & Tied – a Community Art Project

Roxbury is a lovely village in the Western Catskills of New York. Residents range from multi-generational farmers to transplants from “the city” to visitors in town for barn weddings in the summer and ski resorts in the winter and “weekenders” with second homes overlooking forests, valleys, farms and some of the most scenic vistas I have ever experienced. As a new resident, I have learned that it takes quite a while to be considered a “local”, but shopping local is, well… inevitable, as the only shopping choices are local and I enjoy exploring the shopping options that include roadside farm stands, artist studios, community events and a handful of charming stores.

The story behind the current store window at Roxbury General reflects the essence of the Roxbury community. The fiber sculpture on display in the window is the result of a public event where the community joined artist, Toni Brogan to participate in a community weaving project. Roxbury General shop local store window visual merchandising toni brogan

The community was invited to weave, knot and crochet colored elements into Toni Brogan’s 7-foot sculpture on display at Kirkside Park during the Celebrate Roxbury Festival in July. Catskill Kiwi Roxbury General shop local store window visual merchandising toni brogan

The project was made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant initiative from the NY State Council on the Arts and administered in Delaware County by the Roxbury Arts Group.Catskill Kiwi Roxbury General shop local store window visual merchandising toni brogan delaware county roxburyny

Event attendees, young and old, added colorful flair to Toni’s works of art. Once completed, Toni’s sculpture was hung in the window at Roxbury General and will remain on display through August.

Inspiring reasons to look up

I’m always looking up. Inspiration is everywhere and the creativity of restauranteurs and restaurant designers fascinates me (almost) as much as creative retail spaces.

In our travels, we find local eating establishments to visit during retail roadtrips and when visiting an area for store consults and speaking engagements. Here are a few collected in my image files from the past year. Stay display inspired!

The hanging, jumbo whisk lights at Ella’s Bellas in Beacon,NY are suitably relevant and add to the charm of this well-known bakery. Ella’s came highly recommended by locals and residents throughout the region, especially those familiar with gluten-free options. Word has it that “you’d never know the products are gluten free”. We give it a thumbs up!

A wrong turn while exploring The Pearl brought us to The Culinary Institute, San Antonio campus. The entryway statement piece constructed of sauté and frying pans drew the attention of some birds, as well:

At Fine Folk Pizza in Fort Myers, Florida, they grouped pizza paddles as part of the lighting inside the entrance. I wish my picture could show the scale better.

Retail Roadtrip Recap part 1

Happy New Year! Between Facebook, Instagram and the blog, I share images from the stores we visit each year, but this past year was so busy that I seem to have an especially large cache of visual merchandising pictures, so I’ll spend the next few blog posts sharing some of my favorites.

Red Rooster Boerne, Texas

What a pleasant surprise! I knew Boerne had enough independent stores to warrant a day trip during our Texas retail road trip, but I could have spent several days in this charming town. I had followed Red Rooster for quite a while on social media and the merchandising was just as lovely as in their posts. I wish I could have returned in November to see the store transformed into a holiday wonderland. (Check out their FB page and IG feed to see what I mean.)

Woodstock, Vermont:

A family trip to Vermont in October was a treat beyond words. The fall foliage was spectacular and we stayed a few extra days to “work” and visited stores in Burlington, Stowe, Windsor, Quechee, Waterbury and Woodstock. Loran (the official Retail Details photographer) and I took over 1000 pictures between us. One of his favorite stores was The Vermont Flannel Co.

FLORIDA:

Busy Bee in Live Oak, Florida

Most of our retail road trips begin on a plane, but I decided to explore my home state of Florida a bit more in 2017. I forgot how long it takes to drive the length of Florida as we headed towards some beach towns in the panhandle. On the way, a friend suggested I check out the Busy Bee truck stop in Live Oak and I was impressed with the variety and selection of gifts and souvenirs in their flagship store. I heard it was cited best truck stop in the USA, but after visiting Bucees in Texas a few months later, I think they may have some competition for that distinction.

Inlet Beach, Florida:

Outpost in Inlet Beach, Florida

One of the first stops in the FL Panhandle was a new plaza on 30A in Inlet Beach to visit Mingle, a new store I discovered on Instagram. I reached out in advance to owner, Rebecca for suggestions of other local shops worthy of a peek. (Small business owners are so generous to share suggestions for our trips!) She suggested Outpost, a lovely shop just across the way from hers. A lovely mix of home decor, gifts and apparel, the owners designed the shop to perfectly capture a seaside sophistication vibe. Note: Yes, we made it to Mingle and I’ll share pics from there soon.

Margaretville, New York:

Home Goods of Margaretville, NY

A final image for this post is actually a repeat retail visit. I had been to Home Goods of Margaretville right after Christmas in 2016, so I was curious to see how different the stores in the Catskills are during the summer wedding season versus winter ski season. The local specialty food items were a favorite on this trip!

That’s all for now, but I’ll share more soon. Meanwhile, follow along on Instagram and Facebook and if you are attending Dallas Market Center or NY NOW for winter gift shows, check out my seminars and panels.
