Retailers do not need big budgets to create dazzling displays. This post is dedicated to easy-to-implement display ideas that will help stores DISPLAY. SELL. REPEAT.
Shelves – a visual merchandising staple. Sometimes adjustable in height and length, the real flexibility lies in the backdrop. Paint it, paper it or add cloth for texture and color. At Stephen Franks Garden and Home in Laguna Beach, CA the blue backing is ideal for a monochromatic display of white stoneware. The blue is just dark enough for the clear glassware to show up, as well.
In an opposite example, simple white shelves allow for a mix of merchandise. The trick to displaying a mix of merchandise is to find one common color and alternate the products and heights. It’s no easy task to mix apparel, books, candles and gifts in one display, but this one at Skirt in Stone Harbour, NJ works.
Branding your store. Earring cards are a simple, yet effective display tool that adds a boutique feel to jewelry displays. Research shows that customers are willing to pay more for store branded or artist-carded jewelry as the perceived value is greater. At Cracker Jax in Dekalb, IL the cards are “framed” like pieces of art and the store name goes home with the customer, increasing the chances of a store revisit and emphasizing the uniqueness of the store.
Frequently used for photo styling, display vignettes tell a little story. The angled placement of the frames, boots and boot box at The Silver Lining in Monroe, NC show a good example of a single product feature display. It’s obvious that the boots are for sale and the brand is front and center, but more subtly it implies that the boots are worthy of “framing”.
When creating a simple display of similar merchandise, create visual interest by alternating the sizes and patterns as in this wire display basket at Lavish in San Francisco, CA. A similar effect can be achieved by placing solids randomly between patterned merchandise.
At Retail Details, we LOVE interesting store display window backdrops. These black and white components can be hung curtain-style in a display window and can be hung in many different configurations to vary the color pattern and height. These can be purchased wholesale from The HomePort Collections. (And how great would they look in a display with the zipper pouches in the previous picture? Scroll up one image. (Total coincidence, by the way).

Thanks Beckie. At Silver Lining we use your blog for ideas all the time. It’s like a textbook for new employees but us veterans learn from it to.
LOVE the HomePort Collections display and I also love it when a display tells a story like The Silver Lining.
While I didn’t find any displays that had what you might have been looking for at GlobalShop, I did see a lot of themes of sharing a story with the customer through visual merchandising. And I love this because when done right – it can be so powerful.
Thanks for all of the great work you do!
