A most colorful hardware store window display!

Color is the strongest feature in many displays. Bold color contrast attracts attention. Creating a single color story is another strategy and a very effective way to feature unrelated products. Color patterns draw you in for a closer look. This display is an example of color patterning at its best.

Coles Hardware, retail details blog, visual merchandising, swirlmarketing.comCole Hardware in San Francisco mixes colorful merchandise with the simplest of white props, proving that colorful display techniques are not just reserved for apparel, gifts and toys.

Reader submission:

During a visit to an Ikea near Dallas, my future brother-in-law, Justin thought of Retail Details when he saw this vertical display of lamps and emailed it to me this week. It will be nice to have someone in the family who loves displays as much as I do! He spent an entire day prop shopping with me for some showroom clients in Dallas last winter.

A new Retail Details feature:  I’ll be posting visual merchandising project ideas for input from readers. Please click on “comment”, below the blog post, to share your thoughts and expand on my idea. With the store owners permission, I’ll share pictures of the end results later in the year. Please note, it takes a few hours for your comments to show up on the blog. The comments area is monitored since we get so much spam.

As always, thanks for reading the blog and stay display inspired!

Thank you for always giving me ideas that can be implemented in the real world of retail without needing a staff of architects and graphic designers to construct. Store display ideas for smaller indi stores. But I’ll bet you have alot of the big guys as subscribers to. keep up the great work.

Best post ever thanx. Cozy Cottage will be sending in some pictures soon. You have inspired us to try some colorful spring displays.

The URBAN theme fitting room idea sounds ideal. The multiple New York city apartment locks is so clever. I would add one idea. On the mirror in the dressing room, decorate the edges/frame with self-adhesive tattoo designs. Don’t you think that would be a nice touch?
    Good job Beck.

Thanks for the ideas you sent us!

I always love seeing what displays Cole Hardware has up their sleeves. It’s worth a detour when I’m in that neighborhood. I think whoever first came up with that idea for their store was an absolute genius.

  8. Becky,

I loved that you featured a store from my town Portland, Ore. Love the chair as hanger area for clothing. Brilliant (and not just because I love Portland).

Future brother in law? Does this mean you’re getting married or your sis is? Do tell! (Sorry the girl stuff sidetracks me.)

I loved Cole Hardwares use of color. It wasn’t overkill – but rather the perfect amount.

Will you be at GlobalShop next week? It starts Tuesday! If so, I hope to see you!
    -Heather :)

    • Hi Heather. I love Portland, too… virtually, from a retail perspective. So many great stores there. Tilde is one of my faves. Have you been there? I always love when you stop by the blog. Thanks! I can’t be at GlobalShop, but I sent you an email with a scouting request for a fixture that I need for a client.
      ~Becky
PS: My baby brother is getting married. He got engaged on Valentine’s Day. I’m already married– have been for many, many years to a guy that I thought was cute in high school but we met after he graduated ;-) Our anniversary is this weekend, which is part of the reason why I cannot be in Vegas for GlobalShop.

  9. Wow the chairs from Decades Vintage Store are the most wonderful idea I’ve seen in weeks. The different fitting rooms are amazing.. if no customer is equal to another why the fitting room should be.
